Paying Our Respects on Memorial Day
On this Memorial Day, Garrison Tyranus takes our buckets off in honor of those who’ve fallen in service of the United States. Given our proximity to the nation’s capital and the naval base in Norfolk, this day is especially meaningful to many within our garrison.
In April, garrison members and their family members had the opportunity to partake in a particularly poignant tradition at Arlington National Cemetery. Our very own Dallas Kempo (TB-12687) is a Staff Sergeant and serves in the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier Platoon. Through his efforts, Garrison Tyranus was given the opportunity to take part in the Wreath Laying Ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Dallas also told us about the history of the tomb, the expectations that the soldiers who guard the tomb must meet, and gave us a tour of the Tomb Quarters. The care and detail that go into the making and maintaining a Tomb Guard’s uniform and equipment isn’t all that far removed from the effort that we put into our kits in the 501st.
Being a part of such an event was something that none present will ever forget and we are grateful both for the opportunity and for all of those who have served.
